January 19, 2009
Please join us at New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt MD on the night before President-elect Barack Obama is to be inaugurated, for a showing of "Senator Obama Goes to Africa," distributed by First Run Features
. Beginning at 6:30 pm an optional vegan buffet meal will be offered by Chef Karim for $13.00, and the film begins at 7pm. The film presents then-Senator Obama's personal odyssey to his father's home country, and shows his style of diplomacy in action. We follow Senator Obama from South Africa to Kenya to a Darfur refugee camp in Chad, as he explores that vast continent, and his own family roots. Discussion afterwards will be led by Charles Gatebe and Robert Cahalan, scientists from Goddard Space Flight Center, who recently travelled together to Dr. Gatebe's home country of Kenya to a meeting about impacts of global warming in Africa, on the way visiting several schools to discuss the potential of students in Africa to make a difference.
